Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

I keep forgetting to mention that Kenny and Kathy were down the other evening to take a look at Dave’s new workshop in progress… I talked to Heather on the phone this afternoon and she is going to try out for cheer leading. I hope she gets it. She sounded so excited… Getting a good night of sleep sure does make a person feel better. Except for waking up with wheezing and a bad coughing spell I have had a great day…. Dave left early this morning and was gone most of the day. Leaving me with our three dogs. Dave had to make a trip to Tinker AFB to get me some more drugs. Then from there he had an appointment at the OU Dental College to get his teeth cleaned. Dave’s blood pressure was too high so they sent a fax to his doctor and sent him back home. I worry about Dave so much… I did a load of laundry, some dusting and picking up around the house and worked on the checkbook and paid some bills… All our snow is gone except for a snow ball the boys across the street made… Josh came by this evening for a short visit… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I didn’t take a sleeping pill last night and I didn’t sleep well. I have been very tired today. In fact I have spent most of the day in bed just resting… I was up long enough to take care of my houseplants…. I will be sure and take a sleeping pill tonight…. I am still wheezing and coughing and that is taking a lot out of me… Dave is taking great care of me. I don’t know what I would do without him…. Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Saturday, January 29, 2005

I took two cough pills before going to bed last night and I was able to sleep through the night without a coughing spell… I woke up with a terrible headache this morning on the right side of my head but thank goodness it didn’t last that long… There were several Robins in our back yard this morning. It seems every year they show up a little earlier than the year before… David called this morning. He is such a busy guy. He has been hauling a cow back and forth to the vet. Seems as though the cow has stepped on some barbed wire. There is a big difference in hauling a cow and a dog to the vet. He has to take the cow back again Monday… I called a school friend Lyn in South Dakota. Lyn just recently had a shunt put in and seems to be doing okay… I washed a load of clothes, cleaned the bathroom, and made some peanut butter cookies… Dave and I watched a DVD this afternoon. “Cellular” … My Aunt Florence called… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Garnette!!! Garnette is our friend in Corsicana, Texas… Last night Kenny came down with my cough pills he had picked up for me at the drug store. I took one last night but tonight I think I will take two. I am still coughing and wheezing… I woke up to a nice snow this morning and it sure was pretty… I hosted chat this afternoon, answered some emails, did some DASN work and worked on deleting many unwanted emails… I called Garnette… Josh came down after school and we watched I. Robot… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Today would have been Dave's Mother's 97th. birthday. We all miss her very much...
Thanks to Clarence and Joann in Welcome, North Carolina for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book… I am thinking the steroid shot and the breathing treatment helped me yesterday… We had a nice dinner at Alfredo’s with Alfred and Martha and I didn’t have too much trouble with coughing. I was really worried I would have a bad coughing spell in front of everyone. Then we went to their home for some desert and from there Dave took me to the hospital for my sleep study. I didn’t sleep real well. I woke up coughing a couple times. It could have been much worse. The tech gave me an Ambien to help me sleep… The hospital also has mental patients there. I was dreaming that there was a mental patient that kept coming into my room trying to unhook all my wiring. LOL The test was over with at 5:00 and Dave was there to pick me up… I won’t know how I did on the breathing test or the sleep study until my doctor returns from vacation in a couple weeks. I got home and got in the shower and it took me two shampoos to get all the gunk out my hair they had used to wire up my head… I have been back to coughing and wheezing today. But I have my inhaler and cough syrup. Kenny is picking up some medication for me that is to help with my cough that the doctor recommended… I called Chip and he isn’t feeling well either. We tried to pick each other up, he made me laugh and I started coughing and then he would cough. I also called Nancy, she is my new Alzheimer’s phone buddy that the local Alzheimer’s Assn connected me with… Janey from Plainfield, Illinois called, it is so good to hear from her and how well she is coming along. We almost lost Janey back in the fall… I was back to hosting chat today after taking some time off. I will also be hosting tonight… I did a load of laundry and picked up around the house… Dave has been busy building a workshop in the garage. I tease him about building a hide e hole to hide from me… We are expecting freezing rain/snow mix for tonight… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Belated Birthday Norma!!! Norma is our friend in North Carolina… Happy Belated Birthday Norma!!! Norma is a special friend in California
Thanks to Judy in Clemmons, North Carolina and Lulu in Cocoa, Florida for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book at my other web page. http://www.angelfire.com/ok4/mari5113/index.html
Sorry but I needed a few days off from journaling. I have been a pretty sick girl and this has been going on since before Christmas… I have made several trips to the doctors and gone through two rounds of antibiotics and I didn’t get any better. The coughing and wheezing continued… Yesterday I went to see a pulmonary doctor, she was recommended to me by Lori’s sister Brenda… I really liked this doctor. The first thing that she had me do was to get an X-ray. After examining me she gave me a steroid shot. She said my X-ray showed that my lungs were clear. She is thinking I have Asthma. Then she made an appointment for a pulmonary exam for this morning at Mercy Hospital and also scheduled me for a sleep study for tonight at Deaconess Hospital in Bethany. So I will be spending tonight at the hospital. I am hoping that comes out okay. If I find out I have sleep apnea that means I will probably have to sleep with a C Pap machine. Dave is already doing that and has for several years now… The doctor leaves tomorrow for a two-week vacation so I probably won’t know anything until I go back for my appointment next month… I got caught up on the laundry yesterday because I had to because Dave was running out of underwear… Clarence, if you are reading this I did get the picture of you and Joann but when I tried to write you it came back as undeliverable. I am wondering if you have accidentally blocked me… I have called a few friends today and trying to cheer up a friend always makes me feel better… Today before I go into the hospital we are meeting with Alfred and Martha for dinner… Tonight Dave will have some ME time… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Joann in Welcome, North Carolina for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book…
There isn’t much of a change today in the way I am feeling. I have been really drowsy today because of all the medication I am taking. I tried to watch a DVD “Troy” but kept falling asleep… I had a call from the McGee Eye Institute saying they had a cancellation and they wanted to do my cataract surgery on Tuesday but since I am sick and have a terrible cough they didn’t think it was a good idea. So she put me back on their waiting list… I am going to try and stay awake to watch the Billy Graham special on television… It got up to 74 degrees… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Yesterday the wheezing and the coughing had gotten much worse and I knew it was now in my chest. Dave called in the morning and made an appointment with Dr. Brown. I got in at 1:30, found out I not only have asthma but also have bronchitis. He started me on a new antibiotic Zyrtec. This one is supposed to be really good and you only take it for five days. I got more cough syrup H-C Tussive. He also gave me some samples of Singulair and Zithromax, He recommended I get a flu shot. He didn’t have any at his office and suggested we go to the Health Department so both Dave and I got one… Then while we were out I ran into the license’s bureau and got my driver’s license renewed even though I no longer drive… I didn’t rest at all last night and today we had to go to Tinker to get our medications. That was an all day thing. I wouldn’t have gone but I wanted to get started on the antibiotic as soon as possible. We had lunch at IHop while we waited for them to fill the prescriptions…. I could hardly wait to get back home so I could crawl in bed. I was lying here about to fall sleep when I heard them mention Tracy Mobley on the news. They showed the TV interview they did of Tracy and Allen in Missouri. Tracy and Allen are our friends and Tracy is a DASN member. Congratulations Tracy and Allen on getting the word out that Alzheimer’s is not just an old person’s disease. Tracy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s when she was in her thirty’s…. Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Martin Luther King Jr. Day…
Thanks to Clarence in Welcome, North Carolina for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book… I got up earlier than usual, jumped in the shower, made the bed and picked up around the house because Pro Home was coming to look at our bedroom. They are going to have to do some sheet rock repair work before our warranty runs out… We have identified one of the birds in our back yard as Eastern Meadowlarks… I paid the bills, did laundry, hosted chat, and helped fix supper… I went back to taking the Lipitor. I will give it one more chance to see if it causes weakness again… We finally got above freezing… I am wheezing in the evening and have to use the inhaler… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Sunday, January 16, 2005

Happy Belated Birthday Judy!!! Judy is Dave’s sister in North Carolina… Happy Belated Birthday Jeanne!!! Jeanne is our friend in Hawaii… I woke up feeling much better this morning. Thank goodness I feel like a different person today… It has been a very cold day, high was in the twenty’s, but the sun was nice and so was the sunset… I have noticed two new birds in our back yard. Now I need to see if I can identify them. They are sure going after the sunflower seeds… I hosted chat, played dominoes, solitaire, and did a load of laundry… I had a call from my brother. Carol has fallen and fractured several bones in her foot. He also told me our cousin Joe isn’t doing well. Joe has cancer and Carol and he will be in my prayers and I hope they will be in yours also… I will be watching the Golden Globe Awards tonight… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I wasn’t feeling very good when I went to bed last night and this morning I felt even worse. I have stayed in bed all day because I am feeling so weak. I am thinking it is the new medication… Dave made a big pot of chili and Kenny and Kathy came down and had a bowl. It was Dave’s first time to make Chili and it was really good… Dave and Kathy agreed that I shouldn’t take any more of the Lipitor until I talked to the doctor… I will be glad to get this stuff out of my system… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Friday, January 14, 2005

I have started having trouble sleeping again so I am back to taking Ambien. I have been off Ambien for a couple years after taking it for two years before that. Two years ago I was put on Remeron and that helped me sleep without a sleeping pill but seems to have stopped working now… I got a call early this morning from the eye doctor. They have scheduled the cataract surgery for April 11 unless they have a cancellation then they will get me in sooner. Then the nurse called from Dr. Brown’s office saying my cholesterol was way too high so he put me on Lipitor for that. I eat Quaker Oats every morning for breakfast. It must be in my genes… I kept busy today picking up before the maids arrived doing two loads of laundry this morning before they got here… I haven’t been so busy that I didn’t find time to do some bird watching, answer emails, make a couple phone calls, and watch a sunset… I heard from Paula at the Alzheimer’s Assn. She gave me a lady’s name to call that wanted a phone buddy. I phoned her and the lady is in her eighty’s and is still driving… I hosted a couple DASN chats… My hands are hurting from arthritis… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Dewey in North Carolina and Norma in California for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book…
Dave woke me up early this morning so I could go to the doctor’s office for some lab work. They took so much blood from me I asked the tech if I was giving blood. This is for a follow up on my cholesterol that I had checked about three months ago. Now I just wait for them to call me with the results… Then we went the Dean A McGee Eye Institute for my eye appointment. Dr. Hester said that my left eye cataract had gotten much worse since he last checked it and I was ready for another surgery. He suggested I go get some reading glasses to tie me over until after the surgery. This is because my close up vision has gotten worse and I am having trouble reading small print… Then we went to David and Lori’s. David called us last night and said we needed to come out to see them. He said they had bait for us… We had lunch with them and I got to feed Macey her baby food and give her a bottle then I watched her roll over on the floor. She is going everywhere now. Later I rocked her to sleep… I watched Madison play with her play dough and even got my hands in the dough, I made a turtle for her. She is going next week to visit a day care so she is talking about going to school now and having to do homework. LOL… We left there with fifty pounds of black oiled sunflower seeds and lots of leftovers. Lori made us a chicken potpie and a dish of chicken enchiladas and all I have to do is bake them. They are so good to us… We went by the commissary and picked up some fruit and vegetables and came home… I am really tired but have a good reason to be… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Anniversary Joe and Sandy!!! Sandy is a DASN friend in Ohio…
This hasn’t been one of my better days. I was supposed to participate in the Web X conference this morning for the Oklahoma/Arkansas Alzheimer’s Chapter. But for some reason I never received the instructions to do so. A mix up somewhere… I started a load of laundry and then I went into to study and I was trying to turn on the TV by pointing the remote at Dave’s desktop computer screen. When I told Dave we both laughed. We have to laugh at our mistakes or we would be doing a lot of crying… I did some bird watching today and we only have two different birds here at the feeder. They are purple finches and black chickadees. When we lived at our other house in Oklahoma City we had so many more. I really miss watching the cardinals but can’t say I miss all the sparrows we had there… I helped Dave fix supper and washed our comforter and blanket from our bed. I was hoping to hang them outside to dry but the weather changed my mind so had to dry them in the dryer… It is a cold 32 degrees in Piedmont, USA... Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Monday, January 10, 2005

Last night Dave went up to Kenny’s and he has gotten Tootsie so spoiled that she barked the entire time he was gone. I told Dave the next time he could just take Tootsie with him. For some reason and who knows why she doesn’t like me…
It is another Monday and I am doing laundry, picking up and some dusting. This house sure gets dusty… I could write my name in the bedroom this morning on the dust… I hosted chat and played dominoes and that is about it for today… Josh called to tell me about his weekend. I am always happy to hear from the grandchildren… Dave fixed our supper… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Sunday, January 09, 2005

I have been really tired today, maybe because of all the fun I had the past couple days… I worked on my list for the Schwan man, played solitaire, and help fix supper… It got up in the sixties today but for next weekend they are talking about zero… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Aralee!!! Aralee is a classmate of mine in Schertz, Texas… We had a good visit with Alfred and Martha last night. After they left Kenny and Kathy came down… This morning Kenny called and asked us to go running around with him. Kathy had to work. We hit every pawnshop we saw. While the guy looked at the tools and etc. I was busy looking at the jewelry. We really had a fun time… Tonight after supper Dave and I went up to Kenny and Kathy’s. I helped Kathy with a curtain rod project she had going and then we watched a movie… While I was up at Kathy’s I made several phone calls… I talked on the phone till I was losing my voice. One more day on antibiotics and I will be happy to get off them… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Friday, January 07, 2005

Last night I called Martha and invited her and Alfred over to eat supper with us tonight…
I have had a busy day. Doing laundry and picking up and helping Dave fix some tortilla soup for our supper. I baked a pumpkin pie too. This is good weather for both… I had received a letter from the local Alzheimer’s Assn. asking me to call them. So today I did that and spoke to Paula who sounds like a very nice lady and I am looking forward to doing some volunteering for them. She said there are people who want to talk to others on the phone with Alzheimer’s. Some have the disease and others are caregivers. I will be doing the calling as soon as she gives me their numbers. I am looking forward to doing this. It makes me feel better when I feel useful… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thursday, January 06, 2005

Happy Birthday Matthew!!! Mathew is our great grandson in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky who is seven today… Dave and I laughed so hard last night when we watched White Chicks. It was so good for us to have a good laugh… I had a call from Judi, a friend in Iowa that we were to meet at the hotel today as they were passing through Oklahoma City on their way to their new home in Arizona but because of our bad weather she and Harry took the southern route to Arizona so we didn’t get to meet. But we will another time I am sure of it… I am starting to suffer from cabin fever I think. I can’t remember the last time I was out of the house. I think it was when I visited the doctor over a week ago… Schools were closed again today and it is so cold here… I did get to see the sun and watched a beautiful sunset. So I am thankful for that. Also we noticed we have some different birds eating from our feeder so I need to hunt up my bird book and see if I can identify the birds… I called Chip and Sharon and Sharon was bare footing in Florida. I am so jealous… We had leftovers for supper and I played on the computer most of the day. I did call Lori and Barbara… We received another Christmas card in the mail today and I think that will be our last one… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

OU lost their game last night at the Orange Bowl and the best team won. I am happy that the OU team made it to the Orange Bowl for two years in a row… I went to bed last night with a headache, one of the worst that I have had in a long time… I woke up to very cold weather and ice this morning. We have had freezing rain, and snow. The weather is so bad that they closed the schools and I won’t be surprised it they are closed again tomorrow. We are to get down to six tonight and not much warmer tomorrow… Kathy called down here to make sure we had power. They have a different Electric service than we do. So they could have power and we could be with out and we could have power and them not. That could be a good thing as we can go to each other’s house to stay warm… I have felt good today. I cooked a turkey breast and made a big supper with some help from Dave… I had two movies come in from NetFlix and I shared them with Josh and Heather. They were White Chicks and Elf. I watched Elf this afternoon and will watch the other one later tonight… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Tuesday, January 04, 2005

I woke up with a terrible headache this morning but it got better as the day went by… I made potato soup for lunch, hosted chat, took care of the houseplants, and did laundry. I got to see the bottom of the hamper again. Laundry is done for a few days. Yeah… I helped Dave fix supper… Dave and I are looking forward to the Orange Bowl game tonight. We are hoping OU beats Southern California… We are expecting a bad ice storm tonight. I am praying we don’t lose our power… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Monday, January 03, 2005

Happy Birthday Ashley!!! Ashley is sixteen today and is our grandniece in Seagrove, North CarolinaI woke up around noon feeling pretty rough… I remembered my Vitamin B/12 shot was over due so asked Dave to give it to me and he did… I stripped the bed and did laundry. I am so tired of pushing myself to get anything accomplished… Dave went to Tinker to pick up our medicines and I chose to stay home. I just didn’t feel like going anywhere… Pat a friend in Midwest City called and Josh called… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Sunday, January 02, 2005

It has been cloudy all day and looks like we have some rain and colder weather coming our way. I think our sixty and seventy-degree days are gone for a while… I have been watching the birds at the feeder today and I counting eleven of them out on the feeder or on the ground at once… I have been lazy today made a few phone calls and helped Dave fix supper… I played solitaire and hosted chat… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy New Year!!!
I went to bed early last night but I stayed awake till midnight. Dave was sawing logs at midnight… Erin our granddaughter and husband Kerry from Norman called this morning and came out and spent the day with us. We enjoyed visiting with them and had a nice meal together. And yes we made sure we had our black-eyed peas for good luck. I didn’t have any greens for wealth but did eat broccoli I hope that counts… Dave fixed up a computer for Kerry and Erin to use. Erin will be doing her college work on it… I think I am feeling worse today than I felt yesterday and my wheezing is worse. Maybe I tried doing too much today. This was my first day out of bed all day… Kenny and David called… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
