Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

Another month has flown by. It will be Christmas before we know it. I had a follow up appointment with Dr. Brown this afternoon. He is referring me to a surgeon to see what he wants to do with my problem… I went by and got a haircut on my way home and that sure made me feel better… After supper Dave and I took a walk in the neighborhood. He did the walking and I was on my scooter. The weather has cooled down and I can stand to be out in the evening now… David called and Kenny and Josh came down… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Today has been just beautiful. The temperature was in the low 80’s. The Monarch butterflies are all over the place… Shiloh is getting to feel at home now. She can be trusted to go outside now without a leash. We will not let her out if we are having storms because she gets very frightened and would probably just take off running… I have been so tired. I think it is all from stress. Dave is having trouble following doctor’s orders and that puts a lot of stress on me.,, I hosted the DASNI chat this afternoon. We had a special guest in chat. Kumiko, a reporter from Japan was visiting Lynn in Vancouver and joined us and wanted to ask us questions. After chat I took a short nap. We are still getting our supper brought in every evening by our neighbors. This has helped out so much. I have enough to do without having to worry about fixing supper. God bless our neighbors… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Steve in Providence, Rhode Island for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book…
Kathy drove us to Dave’s doctor’s appointment in southwest OKC. We were lucky Kathy is off on Monday’s to take us. The appointment went well. Dave got the clamps taken out and also the catheter. He had a UTI so the doctor put him on Cipro. The doctor gave Dave a copy of the pathologist report. It says that the cancer was just what the doctor thought it was, transitional cell carcinoma… We stopped at Wal-Mart and got the prescription filled and picked up some fruit and other things we needed… It was raining hard on our way home so Kathy drove to her house and I drove us on home. It was a very short distance. Dave didn’t jump out of the car so guess I did okay… I fixed lunch when we got home and after lunch Dave took a long nap… I unloaded the dishwasher, got the trash ready to go out and Josh came down and took it down to the end the drive way… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Yummy… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Lori in Norman, Oklahoma and Aralee in Schertz, Texas for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book….
Dave was tired today and rested quite a bit. Thanks Kenny… Alfred and Martha came to visit and brought some more groceries. We have plenty of food in the house now… We got a much needed rain today but along with the rain we got thunderstorms and we lost power for an hour or so… Cindy our Bichon dog got out and dug in the mud and Dave let her in the house not realizing she was covered in mud. GRRRRRRRR I gave her a bath and I will deal with the house another day… I watered the house plants and heated up our supper… Lori called… Dear God give me some energy tomorrow… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

They removed the kidney, ureter, and part of his bladder. He has two nice size incisions. I visited him in the hospital every day. David and Lori brought him home on the 22nd and he is doing really well.. But he has a good nurse too, “ME”… The dogs and I are very happy to have him home…. The hummingbirds have been given me dirty looks through the window so I filled the feeder and now they are happy again. They keep me busy… David came to visit us and that always makes me happy. He taught me how to use the remote for the satellite I had no idea that I could do so much with the remote… I have been enjoying the OETA channel with Daniel O’Donnell… David and Kenny went to Wal-Mart to get a prescription for Relafen filled for me. It is a drug that Tinker doesn’t carry it… I fixed a pork roast dinner, hosted the afternoon DASNI chat and watered the plants inside and out… Sandy in Rusk, Texas called me. It was good to chat with her again… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Belated Birthday Tom!!! Tom is a friend in Dallas, Texas.... Dave found out his Pet Scan will be done next Tuesday… I got up early this morning for a follow up appointment with Dr. Brown. He ordered lab work and also did a urinalysis, which he said showed blood in my urine. He started me on another pill for inflammation and I am supposed to put heat to my breast three times a day and if I am still hurting in a couple weeks I should see him again. Then the next step would be a biopsy. He mentioned that it could be Paget Disease… We left the doctor’s and went to Tinker Air Force Base. We had to pick up meds from the pharmacy and then to the BX and the Commissary. I was worn out by the time we got home. So tired I was ready to cry… I hosted the DASNI chat this evening… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Another hot day, 105 and that is in the shade... Another guy lost his life to heat related causes. That makes 21 who have died due to the high temperatures… I went for an ultra sound of my breast and they couldn’t find anything wrong. They even did a repeat of the mammogram. I wished I could find out what is causing the pain. I am so glad to know it isn’t cancer… I fixed supper and got caught up with the laundry… Goodnight all… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

When Dave left early this morning to take Shiloh for her second and final heartworm treatment he counted 14 turkeys across the road from our house. When he told me I was disappointed I missed seeing them but I was busy sawing logs at the time. LOL… Alfred and Martha came by this afternoon for a visit. We always enjoy their visits… I went with Dave to pick up Shiloh from the Vets. She is free to run and play and do whatever she pleases now and no more aspirin therapy. What a relief that is. She will start her Heartgard next month and she goes back to be checked for heartworms in six months… On the way home we stopped at Sonic and picked up our supper. I had my first Hot Fudge Brownie Blast and boy was that good stuff and it could be habit forming… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

George is in San Antonio visiting Aunt Flo… Our power went off for about an hour. Not a good thing to happen when Dave’s is running to the bathroom. We have no water when our power is off. We were already making plans to move to the motor home with our three dogs if it didn’t come back on soon. Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Belated Birthday to Chip and Martha… Today I started taking five mg of Namenda twice a day. So far I haven’t noticed any difference… We got home yesterday from Black Forest, Colorado. We went up there for Dave’s brother George’s memorial services. Dave spoke and did a terrific job honoring his brother… David and Lori met us there. They also attended a baseball game in Denver… It was a very hot trip but we managed to keep cool in the motor home with the generator running both air conditioners some of the way… We made a stop in Rocky Ford, Colorado and bought some watermelon, cantaloupe, corn, and tomatoes… I got all the laundry done and plants inside and out taken care of yesterday.
