Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

Happy 36th Anniversary Dewey and Judy… Judy is Dave’s sister in Clemons, North Carolina… Watching the news of hurricane Katrina is really making me sad. I feel so bad for those people and continue to pray for them… Dave and I decided this morning that we would have to cancel our vacation to New England due to the increase of fuel prices… I hosted two chats and not much else accomplished today… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

My legs hurt me all night long. I woke up with a pain in my rib cage and it is still there. I am doing nothing but complaining so will stop it right now… I washed our bedding and the dogs bedding so we all have clean beds to sleep in tonight… My computer has been dimming and I thought it was the battery that was going bad. Dave called Dell and they told him it was the motherboard. Found out my warranty expires tomorrow. I really lucked out there. They are sending a box for us to send the computer back to them. I am so thankful it is still under warranty… I was hungry for tortilla soup so I cooked a chicken and that is what we had for supper… I called Martha and they are in Virginia. We are watching diesel fuel prices and if it goes much higher we may have to cancel our trip. Boo Hoo… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I have spent much of today trying to get AOL to work for me and finally had to call AOL for assistance… Monarchs are really enjoying the butterfly bushes and Lantana. They seem larger this year than I remember them being. The Hummingbirds are enjoying the nectar and Passion Flowers… I did a couple loads of laundry, fixed supper, picked up around the house, played solitaire, watered the inside plants and fed the flowers outside… Dave and Kenny are out flying their planes and I am waiting on a sunset but instead of a sunset I got thunderstorms… My thoughts and prayers are with all in the path of hurricane Katrina… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I got woke up early with a phone call from a solicitor. Grrrrrr…. We are starting to load the motor home. This job is stressful for me. I don’t want to forget anything and the climbing up and down the steps is so hard on my knees. I am making notes and as I think of things we need I am putting them in the utility room… I made dried beef gravy and biscuits for lunch and invited Kenny, Kathy, and Heather down. Kenny has mentioned several times how much he used to enjoy my dried beef gravy and biscuits so I finally got everything I needed to make it for him… We heard from Richard, Dave’s brother and he gave us good news on his medical problems… Martha called and they were in Ashville, North Carolina going to the Biltmore Hotel. We went there a couple years ago… I thought we were going to get some rain today but missed out on it… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I went under cover and he finally left, I guess he gave up… I dusted, did laundry, hosted chat, and fixed supper. I fixed Spaghetti and fried green tomatoes… I had a phone call from Rosalie, a long time friend. I called Pat, a friend in Midwest City and Nancy in Oklahoma City. Happy Birthday Perry!!! Perry is Lori’s grandfather and our friend in Okemah, Oklahoma… The repairman came this afternoon for our refrigerator and said the compressor was bad. So now we wait until he can locate a compressor. It could take a week if they don’t have one in stock. We are sure happy it is still less than a year old and still under warranty. Also it could have quit while we were on vacation. That would have been bad… I finished doing laundry that was still in the washer from yesterday and got it all dried and put away. I hosted chat and we have spent most of the day planning our vacation. We are getting excited. This time we are heading to Vermont and visiting other states as we go. Alfred and Martha left today for vacation and we will meet up with them in Vermont… I watched Josh and Heather get off the bus and waved at them… Dave and I walked up to the garden and picked okra. I fixed a mess of okra for supper and the rest I put in the freezer… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Today would have been my brother Everett's 58th. birthday. I sure miss you Everett...
Dave took all the screens off the windows in the back of the house and washed them and he and I washed the windows inside and out. Boy I was sure sweating when I finished. Our house has so many windows but we love them. It was very hot and humid today… I fixed supper and did more laundry… Karmelita is back to her old self and her breath doesn’t stink anymore… Josh came down for a visit and gave me a hug… Jeanne in Hawaii, I am so sorry I missed your phone call but got your sweet message on CALLWAVE… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

We got another good rain during the night and early this morning… Dave took Karmelita into the Vet this morning to have her teeth cleaned. I went with him to pick her up. The Vet removed a few of her teeth and she also removed a polyp. I worried about her all day and was glad to see her back home and so were Cindy and Tootsie. She is on antibiotics and has been eating and acting fine. We really like our new Vet… I did laundry, fixed supper, and went to chat at: http://www.alzinfo.com/community/chatrooms/ I met a person there from Kuwait… I had calls from Chip and Nancy… I am going out on the porch and watch Kenny fly his new plane that Dave just finished for him… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Anniversary to Michael and Sally… Michael and Sally are our friends in Hollywood, California… We got another good rain during the night. The grass is so nice and green. This is very unusual for an Oklahoma August… I cleaned a few windows and picked up around the house… I went out on the patio and read some of the magazines that Lori had given me and watched Josh and Heather get off the school bus. I waved and Cindy barked at them… Tonight our new Kitchen aide refrigerator and freezer stop working. We will call tomorrow about getting it fixed… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Because of thunderstorms last night I wasn’t able to get online to post a journal… Yesterday we took our old refrigerator that was in the garage to David and Lori. It was just sitting there and we were happy that someone could get some use out of it. We took our side by side to the garage when we got our new stainless steel one… Lori fixed a nice dinner for us… I called Joanne a friend in New Jersey yesterday it was good catching up with her. We met online about seven years ago in CWPML… I went out on the patio this morning with my coffee I was thinking I would sit out there and enjoy watching the birds but it was much too humid for me… I fixed lunch and hosted chat. There were people in chat from England, United Kingdom, Philippians, Turkey, California, Texas, and Oklahoma. It is so neat how we can chat with people from all over the world… Dave got all the weeds pulled out of my flower gardens and I really appreciate him doing that. He is a keeper for sure… This afternoon I just sat and looked out my big windows at the beautiful clouds. The monarchs have arrived. I love watching the flying flowers. God gives us so much to enjoy… I did laundry and got it all folded and put away. For supper I heated up some of Lori’s leftovers Cabbage Rolls. Yummy… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Sylvia in Winfield, Alabama for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book… I made it to the doctor’s office in plenty of time. In fact I waited a good hour to see the doctor. This appointment was with the orthopedic doctor. He was very nice and showed me the pictures of my tumor and gave me some pain medication to take when the pain gets unbearable. Also gave me a new prescription for a new surgical boot. I have to wear a boot because the tumor is on top of my foot and around my toes and it hurts too bad to wear a regular shoe.. He said if I had severe pain or swelling in the foot to call him and he would do another MRI and then would refer me to Dr. Smith for surgery of my foot. I want to die with both my feet. He said the fluid in my ankle could mean heart problems and that I should see my heart doctor… On our way home we stopped at a neighborhood garage sale. We didn’t see anything we couldn’t live without. Then we went by the Vet’s office and made an appointment for Karmelitia’s teeth cleaning. The vet told us when the dogs went in for their shots that Karmelitia’s teeth were needing cleaning . I am hoping it helps with her bad breath and makes her live longer… I had a call from Aunt Flo and she is feeling much better now. That sure makes me feel better to hear she is doing better. She is my only living aunt. All my uncles are gone too. I am now the third oldest Singer living… I paid bills and tried to balance the checkbook, did laundry, fixed lunch, hosted chat, and fixed supper… Alfred and Martha came out for a short visit tonight… George called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

We left early today to go to Tinker Air Force base to get our drugs and to get groceries. We stopped by the Base Exchange and picked up a few items… We drove by our old home and saw it was up for sale. The neighbors sure is going downhill… The trip to Tinker about wears me out. I helped put away groceries and fixed supper. Then we walked up to check on the garden and to check to see how Josh and Heather made out at their first day back school… I watched a pretty sunset tonight… I am going now to soak in the whirlpool. I have an 8:30 appointment with the doctor in the morning. That is much too early for this old lady… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

I forgot to mention last night that Martha and Alfred brought a DVD for us to watch. “Winn Dixie”, I really enjoyed it… Alfred came today and took Josh to the movies to see “Star Wars.” He brought Martha to visit with me while Dave was out mowing the lawn. We watched Dr. Phil and Oprah together… I did a load of laundry and folded laundry from the other day. I fixed supper while Dave flew his plane… David and George called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I didn’t get dressed until about three… The sun came out late this afternoon... I made more nectar, hosted chat, did laundry and fixed supper… The doctor’s office called about my MRI. The ankle that was suspicious was only fluid. That’s the good news. Dr. Brown said the tumor was still there in my foot and he made an appointment for me to see Dr. O’Brien an Orthopedic doctor on Friday morning… I called Laura... Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Sunday, August 14, 2005

We woke up to a nice rain this morning and the yard is nice and green… I watched a couple movies and fixed us a pork chop supper… This evening I sat out on the back porch and watched the first flight of Dave’s newest plane, the cows walking by near the fence just so I could watch them, and the birds and hummingbirds… Josh came home from his Mother’s house and he will be home now till school starts. He came down and gave me hugs. He gives the best hugs… It is looking like we may get more rain… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Saturday, August 13, 2005

I made more nectar for the hummingbirds. They sure keep me busy but they also keep me entertained. As do the other birds at the feeders that we keep filled with black oiled sunflower seeds… I deadheaded flowers and pulled some weeds. I have to be extra careful bending over to pull weeds because I just may fall. My knees have been known to give out on me. And that is not a pretty site… The farmer across the highway has brought his cows back and I am happy for that as I really enjoy watching them… I have been watching the OETA channel most of the day it is the PBS station. They are showing old shows like the Grand Ole Opera, Elvis, and etc… I started riding my air dyne bike today. I rode for a mile and burned up a total of 15 calories… More storms this afternoon and our power went out just as I got our supper ready. It was out for four hours. Dave had the generator from the motor home hooked up to the refrigerators and freezers… I called David and Lori. Kenny called and came down… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Thanks to Joann in Welcome, North Carolina for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book… I went to Yukon this morning to their Hospital for the MRI and I never did like having to be still for a long time but it was something I had to do if I wanted to know what is going on with my ankle. I was there for three and one half hours… We got home just in time for a big storm. Strong winds, so strong it blew off stuff on our patio. At least we didn’t lose our power. I ran water in the tub and bathroom sinks just in case we did lose our power. If we lose our power we lose our water too because we have a well instead of city water… Josh called me and we talked for a long time. He usually calls me when we are having storms. Josh always gets nervous when we are having storms. I still remember having to calm David and Kenny when they were little when we would have thunderstorms… I forgot to take my afternoon medications… We have been watching the deer in the evening. I get so excited when I get see deer… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

We had just a good time with the grandbabies last night. Madison was ready for a snack when she got here. She had slept all the way here. So I gave her some watermelon and cantaloupe and she loved that. Macey was hanging on to her Grandpa 3 it took her awhile to warm up to me… Madison helped me with our menu for dinner she saw some frozen corn on the cob in the freezer and said she wanted it. She also wanted macaroni and cheese and sliced tomatoes. I added chicken fried steak with gravy, hot crusty bread, and a chocolate silk pie. Madison and Macey both ate really well. Madison going after the corn on cob and Macey loved the steak… Lori was a big help in helping me fixed dinner. I would have never made it without her. She and David also helped me clean up the kitchen. Madison washed off the table for me… Later we all went up to the garden so Madison could pick her own tomatoes, cantaloupe, and watermelon to take home with her. She also carried the left over corn on the cob home with her in a doggy bag… We got an inch of rain last night. We will take all we can get… This morning I slept till 11:30 that was twelve hours of sleep. I must have been tired… I have loafed most of the day not being worth much at all… There were four hummingbirds at the feeders trying to tell me them needed to be filled. One even pecked on the window at me. So I got busy and made more nectar for them… I had phone calls from Lori, and Nancy and I called Martha. Tomorrow we are going to get together and finish off the fish we caught while we were camping in May… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I am sure we hit 100 degrees today or at least 99.9... This morning Cindy, our dog the Bichon, was having a fit barking and barking. When Dave went out to see what she was barking at he saw it was a large turtle. He showed it to me and we decided we would name it DASSY like our turtle logo on DASNI http://www.dasninternational.org/ I am hoping the turtle hangs around here. We have seen all kinds of things out here since we moved to the country like Deer, Turkeys, Skunks, and now Turtles. I hear the Coyotes and Owls but have never seen one … I paid bills and washed our comforter and hung it out on the clothesline to dry… One of our neighbors Todd and Sondra came down and brought our dogs some cookies. They are doggy cookies but they look like the real thing. The dogs love them and I hope I don’t forget they are doggy cookies and end up eating them… Dave got a new airplane in the mail today so he is a happy camper… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
