Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

Happy Belated Birthday Garnette!!! Garnette is our friend in Texas...
I needed a few days break from doing my journal. Sometimes I just don’t feel like doing it and I will force myself to do it. Now I have decided if I don’t want to do it then I am not going to write in it… Yesterday we were gone most of the day, went to get the car washed, went to visit our friends Alfred and Martha and then got groceries. It is a good thing we did that yesterday because today it is freezing cold and icy. Dave went up this morning to get the grand puppies to bring them down here. On his way back when he got out on the patio it had became icy and he had a fall and landed flat on his back. We are so thankful that he didn’t break anything… Today in chat when I was chatting with my friends I was telling them about Dave’s fall. Instead of saying Dave fell I said “Dave feel.” I type the way I talk. It is a good thing at least when I do my journal that I usually have Dave proof read it before I publish it for everyone to see… I called Lori… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I have been busy today. Picking up the house for the maids visit tomorrow. They better show up tomorrow… Dave went up to Kenny’s and brought Sammie and Gracie down to play with our dogs this afternoon. I did a couple loads of laundry, fixed a salad for lunch and made a spaghetti supper… By the time supper was finished I had to lie down on the couch and rest for an hour… I called David… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s journal that Dr. Barreto increased the Neurontin dosage that I am taking to help with the pain in my legs from Peripheral Neuropathy. It helped me sleep so much better last night… I fixed our lunch, folded the towels that were left in the dryer, and fixed supper… The group that Dave and I belong to and the ones we travel all over to meet each spring and fall have decided to come to Oklahoma City in the spring. We are excited about having them visit our city… Linda called… I am watching American Idol and later I will watch Medium… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave had an appointment the cardiologist this morning then he came home and took me to my appointment with a new doctor. She came to me highly recommended. Her specialty is dealing with the elderly. Yes, I am elderly. It is hard for me to say so but I am. I really liked Dr. Barreto. She is young and up to date on Alzheimer’s. That is what I wanted… We had lunch at Subway then went by the grocery store to pick up a few things. When we got home the Schwan man was here. I gave him my order and then I fixed supper… I keep forgetting to take care of my houseplants. I hope I remember to do that when I finish this journal… David called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

The name of the book is The Best Friends Book of Alzheimer’s Activities. This is the sound volume. Their first was published in 2004. I am proud to say I am featured in this book along with other DASNI members. I know it will be a great read. Dave had a doctor’s appointment for a follow up on his blood pressure. So I had some ME time. I fed the fish, fed the birds, took care of the houseplants, cleaned the bathroom, did a load of laundry and he still wasn’t home. I was really starting to worry since his appointment was here in Piedmont only four miles from our house. He was going to get a hair cut and run by the Dollar Store, which is our grocery store in Piedmont. He was gone for a couple of hours. I finally saw him drive up but he couldn’t get up our icy driveway, which is on a hill. He was out there for three hours spreading kitty litter and shoveling and he finally made it… If you click on this link you can hear my story and others who are dealing with dementia http://www.alzinfo.org/story/index.asp We made it up to 32 degrees today. Almost 78,000 are without power in Oklahoma. I called our friends Wade and Jan in Checotah and they are with out power. They said their campground looked like a disaster area, all their trees were down… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

This has been a very tiring day. We left right after lunch and went to Tinker Air Force Base to get our prescriptions filled at the pharmacy and we waited in there for two hours before we got our drugs. We left there with a grocery bag full of medicines and that hopefully will last us for a while. I don’t want to go back there anytime soon. Then we went to the Commissary to get our groceries. I think everyone and their brother were in there stocking up on groceries before our bad weather hits tomorrow. We were in there for almost four hours. It is a good thing I am a patient person… Our poor dogs were crossing their legs when we got home. Anyhow it was past dark when we got home and it is so good to be home… I fixed lunch and supper and helped carry in groceries and put them away… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

The wind has been terrible today. I am watching out my window at the flagpole that is leaning. The wild fires have started again here and that is scary… I picked up around the house, folded yesterday’s laundry, and cleaned my crystal. I don’t think I mentioned that Dave got me a Waterford crystal cross and an angel for Christmas. I wanted the cross but the angel was a complete surprise. He said he had to get me the angel because I was his angel. Now am I lucky or what… Dave’s B/P is still too high but after some nagging from me, he has made an appointment to see a Cardiologist… After a short break my friend Chip Gerber has started up his journal again. I would like for you to visit his website and follow his journey. I know you will enjoy reading his writings as much as I do. Here is the link for Chip’s Journey http://www.zarcrom.com/users/alzheimers/chip.html

It helps keep me out of trouble… David called and I got to talk to Macey… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Tonight's Sunset

Thanks to Claudia in Galena, USA for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book at http://www.angelfire.com/ok4/mari5113/index.html … OU lost their game last night to Boise State but it was a good game. It went into over time… I slept in this morning. When I woke up I turned on the TV and watched the funeral of President Gerald Ford… I am feeling better today so hopefully I will start doing better at writing my journal. I need to start writing earlier in the day so I am not so tired… I fixed lunch and then went into the DASNI chat room http://www.alzinfo.com/community/chatrooms/ Peter from the UK was there. It was great having Peter in the chat room again… The other day Dave took me to the mall. I got a new bedroom ensemble for our guest bedroom. It is in blues and it looks very peaceful. While I was at Penny’s I also got us a king size heated mattress pad and some new flannel sheets for our bed. We spent a lot of money but everything was on sell so we saved some money too. I love saving money… I am looking out my window at our flag, which is flying half-mast. Also watching some men build a storage barn across the road. Soon they will build a new house on that lot and we will have some more new neighbors… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
