Mary's Place

A web page about the life of a lady who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Name:
Location: Piedmont, Oklahoma, United States

I live in Piedmont, OK, with my Husband of 50 years who has been very supportive. We have 2 sons,David and Kenny, 6 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids. I enjoy feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Before I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I ran a Licensed Day Care Home for Infants for 15 years. I noticed I wasn't able to remember important things and having problems with my speech. I was experiencing severe headaches. I would get lost. I didn't know how to use the computer. At the age of 55, I told my doctor. I was sent for an MRI. which showed a large amount of shrinkage. I went to a neurologist who sent me for two days of testing. I was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type. My husband and I were both in shock. I had to give up my job. I went to see a social worker. I've taken Aricept for 11 years. I can now use the computer and even do this web page. I also host a chat room for dementia patients. This is a very lonely disease. I don't want anyone to feel as lonely as I did when I was diagnosed (I thought I was the only one over 50 that had Alzheimer's). In 2006 I started taking Namenda. Also I was told I have a mixed dementia, Alzheimer's/Vascular.

I woke up this morning at 6:00 with a “charley horse” in both legs. Oh how they hurt… It was 104 today… I have been busy doing laundry and picking up. I fixed supper and the rest of the day I waited on the doctor’s office to call me about my lab report and to schedule me for an ultra sound. My lab reports were all good except I am low on sodium. I am supposed to lay off drinking so much water. That is going to be hard to do but I am going to give it a good try…
I am going to take a few days of break from my journal. I will be back…

This morning Dave woke me up extra early. We both had doctor appointments at 8:30… The doctor did lab work and started me on Namenda… After the doctor’s appointment I started looking for a beauty shop. I was in bad need of a haircut. Since Dave had no plans to go to Tinker, that is where I usually get my haircuts. This guy asked me how I wanted it cut? He says short and I said no I just want it shaped. That is what I always tell the person who cuts my hair. Well this guy cut me so short that when I got out in the car I started crying. I was really upset. Dave wanted to go back in there and talk to the manager. I said no it wouldn’t do any good now. All my hair was gone and he couldn’t put it back on. It will grow but not soon enough for me… We left there and went for breakfast since we both had been fasting. Then we went to Lowe’s and picked up some air filters then to Kohls’s. I didn’t find anything so we came on home… I called Martha… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Vernon!!! Vernon is a DASNI friend in Victorville, California… Thanks to Nancy in Topeka, Kansas for visiting Mary’s Place and signing my guest book… Today we went to Macy’s 2nd birthday party. It was held a Chuck E Cheese. Gosh that place was so noisy. I was wishing I had a volume control to turn it all down. The children were having a great time and Dave and I enjoyed visiting with the other grandparents. It was good to see everyone again and Macey was her smiling self. Except when Dave took her picture then she turned shy. She was wearing a beautiful dress that grandma Lori made her from her great great great grandmother’s apron made from feed sacks. I remember wearing dresses my grandmother made me from feed sacks… I groomed some more on Cindy and brushed Karmelita and Shiloh. I have to brush them everyday because of the long coat… I called Ernie and Margie, George, and Aunt Flo. Aunt Flo is not doing well. Please keep her in your prayers… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

We have new neighbors that moved into the lot next to us this week. Dave and Kenny went over and helped them to put down sod. Shawn and Billy are friends of Kenny and Kathy’s. I am glad it was cooler today than it has been… I did laundry, hosted chat, dusted, started grooming Cindy, and watched a movie “A Song for Martin.” I helped Dave fix supper and tonight we watched the Gaither’s on TV then I watched Miss America… Richard, Barbara, and David called… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I fixed our lunch and supper and tonight I hosted the evening DASNI chat. We had seventeen in chat tonight. http://www.alzinfo.com/community/chatrooms/ … Josh came down and gave us a hug before he leaves to go back to his Mother’s house. David and Lori called… This evening it cooled down to the low 90’s and there was plenty of wind blowing so I decided to deadhead the roses and pull some weeds… Kenny came down and sat out on the back porch with us… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Happy Birthday Macey!!! Macey is our great granddaughter in Moore, Oklahoma and is two today... It is so hot, fall can’t come soon enough for me.,. We had a call from George’s son Steve and they are having a memorial service on July 30 and we plan on going to it… Dave told his Doctor today to put him on the schedule for surgery for August 18. That is the day they will remove his kidney… I cleaned the bathroom, did laundry, fixed lunch, and helped fix supper…. We are sure enjoying the squash, zucchini, and cucumbers from the garden… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave woke me up before six this morning so I could go with him to get the CT Scan and see the urologist. David met us there. The Doctor called this afternoon and said the radiologist said that there was definitely something there. And he has left it up to Dave and me on what we wanted to do. Dave and I have talked and tonight after we picked vegetables from the garden, we went up and talked with Kenny and Kathy and we all think he should have it taken out… The bad thing is that the doctor who would be doing the surgery is leaving for vacation and won’t be back until August 8 and won’t be doing surgery until August 18 so we will WAIT again because Dave really likes his doctor… I am so tired tonight. I tried to take a nap this afternoon but the phone kept ringing so I finally gave up. Everyone wants to know about Dave. We really do appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. This is a hard time for both of us… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave left early this morning for an eye appointment and I woke up while he was getting ready. It was okay with me because I was having another nightmare… I cleaned the bathrooms and did a load of laundry. Not wanting to do anything but I keep pushing… In less than 24 hours we will find out the results of Dave’s CT Scan. We are both anxious. David has told us he wants to be there with us and I am glad he will be there with us… I have been working on writing something for our DASNI president Shirl on what DASNI and the chat room means to me. I know what it means to me but to put it in writing is so hard for me to do now… I have been working on Ms. Shiloh’s attitude problem with a water gun. It seems to be working… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

I had another terrible nightmare last night. I was sure happy to wake up this morning and find it was only a dream…
This morning Alfred called and wanted us to meet Martha and him at the Mexican Restaurant in Piedmont for lunch and we agreed to do that… After lunch we came back here to visit for a while… Josh came down and told us about their trip to Branson. They got to visit the Titanic Museum and saw the Yakov Smirnoff Show. He bought a CD of the show they saw and we watched it this evening. We could see Kenny and Josh in the theater… I called Chip and Sharon… Tonight I have another headache. I wish I knew what was causing them… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave got a call from his brother Bob this morning that George had passed away about 10:00 CDT this morning. Our prayers go out to Joyce, Steve and Dan and their families… We felt when we visited George and Joyce in April that would probably be our last time to see him. We did have a good visit then and that visit will always remain with us… David called and my brother George called to let me know that Carole is in the hospital. We wish her well... Kenny and family made it home safely from Branson and they had a great time… Dave mowed all day and I kept giving him water. I worried about him being out in the heat. But he handles the heat much better than I do. I fixed us a meatloaf, baked potatoes, zucchini, and cottage cheese and bananas for supper… Tonight we took a drive to Sonic and had a Butterfinger Blast… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Saturday, July 15, 2006

Not much going on here today. We have just been lying around watching TV and holding our dogs… David and Kenny called… I hosted chat and helped fix supper… Dave gave me a Vit B-12 shot… Dave’s brother in Colorado is on his way out. Found out tonight that his organs are shutting down. Everyone loves George… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

While the maids were here this morning I walked Shiloh, pulled some weeds and deadheaded the Roses… I did another load of laundry, fixed supper and hosted the evening DASNI chat http://www.alzinfo.com/community/chatrooms/ … Kenny, Kathy, Josh, and Heather left this evening to go to Branson, Missouri. They asked us to go with them but it is too hot for us to go anywhere… This heat is really bothering both Dave and me. I am so thankful we have A/C and Ice Cream… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave picked up Shiloh this morning and she was so happy to be home she gave me a lot of kisses. I really think Cindy and Karmelita were happy to see her come home too. She has to go back in a month for another day stay. We are to give her a half of adult aspirin everyday and keep her quiet… Dave left to go have lunch with some friends he used to work with. I think there were five of them. He came home very tired and went to bed right after supper... Josh came down and brought a DVD for us to watch and stayed with me till Dave came home… I did two loads of laundry and fixed supper. I have been busy getting ready for the maids visit tomorrow… Tonight I watched the dog show on Animal Planet, I love watching the different dogs… It was a 101-degree day, too hot for me… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Just been piddling around the house today. I am sure happy that Shiloh will be coming home tomorrow… Kenny and Josh came down tonight. Josh is home visiting his Dad for a while. Josh is looking forward to meeting Shiloh tomorrow… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

This morning Dave took Shiloh in for her heartworm treatment. Gosh I sure do miss her. She would follow me everywhere I went. And in the mornings Dave would take her out of her crate to go potty then when she would come in she would jump in bed and give me a kiss… We broke down and got a satellite today. We have lived here over two years with only the local channels. I am still not sure we need all these channels. Seems like an awful lot. We have been playing with changing channels and Dave is enjoying the History and Nasa channels… I folded yesterday’s laundry and got it put away and helped fix supper… David called... We thought we were going to get some rain this afternoon but it went around us but then tonight it came back around and we got a good one. And yes, I did walk in the rain until it got too heavy and with the lightening I decided it wasn’t a good idea… I have been busy watering houseplants inside and plants outside, deadheaded flowers, did laundry, dusted our bedroom and cleaned the bathroom, went to chat, fixed lunch, and helped fix supper… We took some fresh vegetables from our garden to our new neighbor and finally got to meet her and I already forgot her name. Also delivered some to another neighbor… Dave’s brother Richard called and we had a nice chat… I have a terrible headache tonight, it started on the left side of my head and traveled up to the front of my head… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

We got home really late last night from Kenny and Kathy’s. The first fight was exciting but the last one wasn’t worth staying up for… I haven’t been worth much today. I went to chat and the rest of the time I have loved on Shiloh. I hate to think about what she has to go through to get rid of the heartworms. But it is something that has to be done… Shiloh and I took a nap this afternoon. I felt worse when I woke up than I did when I laid down… I am still worried about what Dave will find out too… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave and I taken June, 1975

Alfred and Martha called and came out this afternoon. They brought their four Schnauzer puppies. I think they are about six weeks old now and are so cute… My Passion Vine is finally starting to bloom and the flowers are so pretty they don’t even look like they could be real. Lynne and Larry, I always think of you two when I look at them. I remember Dave and I flying down to Iowa Park and you giving me a start… Dave and I enjoyed our first watermelon of this year and it was so good and it was even seedless which made it even better… I cleaned the bathrooms, hosted chat, did a load of laundry, and planted some hollyhock seeds that Lori brought me back from Richard’s house… I guess we aren’t going to be out on the back porch again without Shiloh being on a leash. She saw Kenny working on his lawn and she took off barking at him. I think the suncap that Kenny was wearing scared her and she took off running as fast as she could up the road. She ran about a half mile. Kenny and Dave jumped in Kenny’s Mustang and went after her and caught her. Some guy in a car stopped and was trying to pick her up but she ran from him. Anyhow I sure am thankful that she didn’t get hit by a car and she is safely home with us again… Tonight we have been invited up to Kenny and Kathy’s to watch the fights on TV… Goodnight All.,. It felt so good to wake up this morning and know that I didn’t have to go anywhere today. Can you tell I enjoy staying home? … I hosted chat this afternoon, fixed lunch, and helped fix supper and tonight Dave and I made two loaves of zucchini bread… Kenny had supper with us… We sat outside this evening and it was so nice. It didn’t even feel like July… We are working on Shiloh’s attitude. She has an appointment to go in next week to be treated for heartworms… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

As soon as I had breakfast and had my shower this morning we left to go pick up David and Lori at the airport. The plane landed right on schedule and no lost luggage. We brought them to our house so they could meet Shiloh and they loved her too… Then we took them to Piedmont to the Mexican Restaurant and we all enjoyed a delicious meal. Then we took them home to Norman. They are happy to be home and we are happy that they are home… The traffic was terrible today. I don’t know when I have been so scared. People were driving crazy. I was sure happy to get back home safely… Goodnight All… Shiloh has started to growl at the other dogs. All of a sudden she thinks she is boss. LOL… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

The doctor removed the stint and said that the urine test that they ran last week called NMP22 to detect cancer showed positive but he said that happens sometimes when they have a stint in. He has scheduled him for a CT Scan in two weeks. He wants to give him a chance to heal up from having the stint removed… I fixed lunch and supper and I did two loads of laundry. The towels are still in the dryer, maybe they will get folded tomorrow and maybe not. I still need to put clean sheets on the bed. I hate having to do that when I am so tired… I deadheaded the Geraniums and fed them some Miracle Gro, also fed the tomato plants… We went by Aldi’s and the bank… Today was the first day we have left Shiloh since we got her and she did fine, still no accidents from her and she has gained nine ounces since we got her… Goodnight All… Keeping the Faith In Oklahoma

He has a new colt and we are looking forward to seeing Buckshot… I have been going to the afternoon chat but usually am outside for the evening chat and can’t bring myself to come in the house to chat but tonight I did go in to chat for a short time before going outside with Dave and the dogs… The link to our DASNI chat room is: http://www.alzinfo.com/community/chatrooms/ Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Last night we weren’t able to see the fireworks from our house. Kenny wanted me to go with him and Kathy to Piedmont to watch them. I was very tired, it was past my bedtime and was going to refuse but he wouldn’t let me. I have to admit I was glad I went. It was one of my favorite firework shows. Dave didn’t go, he was hurting really bad after mowing all day. He will be so happy when the doctor removes the stint on Wednesday. Me too, because I don’t like seeing my honey hurt… Dave cleaned the aquarium for me today. The fish and I are both happy… All I want to do is hold Shiloh, she is so sweet. She enjoys being brushed which is a good thing since she has long hair. We are beginning to think she is a Papillion. Here is a description of a Papillon. “The Papillon is a small, friendly, elegant Toy dog of fine-boned structure, light, dainty and of lively action. He is distinguished from other breeds by his beautiful butterfly-like ears. Paps are very devoted to their masters, with a hearty spirit making them desirable for show or companionship. Papillons are hardy and usually long lived. They adapt to almost any climate and are comfortable in an apartment as well as the country. They are good travelers. They love to be with their family. They are friendly, happy and eager to please. They rank the number one Toy Dog in obedience”… Shiloh started eating the dry dog food today. Yesterday we broke down and bought her some canned dog food because she wouldn’t eat… I did a load of laundry and fixed a fish supper. My lower back was killing me by the time I finished fixing supper… Dave and I sat outside and watched the neighbor’s fireworks tonight. All of our dogs got very nervous… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma

Dave on tractor

Happy Canada Day to my Canadian friends… Thanks to Mary Beth in Topeka, Kansas for visiting Mary’s Place http://www.angelfire.com/ok4/mari5113/index.html ,signing my guest book and voting for me… While I was outside deadheading flowers this afternoon I saw the woodpecker eating the suet at the birdfeeder. I hadn’t seen the woodpecker in quite sometime… Kathy came down and we agreed to sit outside in our backyard tonight and watch the fireworks instead of going downtown Piedmont. We should be able to see them from here. I am thinking we watched them from here last year… I hosted chat this afternoon and it was a good one… I was craving corn on the cob really bad this afternoon and thinking we need to get some from the grocery when I remembered I had some corn on the cob in the freezer I had gotten from the Schwan man. So in no time I was cooking up some corn. I am wondering if other people with Alzheimer’s have the cravings like I do… I took a picture of Dave on his tractor cutting grass today so you can see his new umbrella that Kenny and Kathy got him. It sure came in handy today because it was so hot… Goodnight All… Keeping The Faith In Oklahoma
